November 2021

1st November 2021

The school was alive with the sound of Music when we returned after half-term when pupils from Yr 3, 4, 5 and 6 joined together (at a safe distance) to open the newly renovated Music Studio. During the Summer holidays, the studio was completely gutted to allow for new soundproofing between the studio and the Year 6 classrooms, as well as new lighting, carpets, purpose built storage, keyboard desks and a staged area to allow the room to become a vibrant, dedicated space for music.

The room was formally opened to a very small audience, with the ribbon being cut by Mr James Underwood; CEO of West Sussex music. Mr Underwood enjoyed the varied performances, and commented that this was the first school performance he had been able to attend since March 2020!  He later contacted the school "please pass on my “congratulations” to all the performers. As well as the quality of the playing it was great to see how much everyone enjoyed performing and how supportive they were of each other; they did themselves, and you, proud. What lucky children to be at such a musical school!"

The performance featured ensembles and soloists from Yrs 3-6, and showcased some of the musical talent we have at Georgian Gardens. From original compositions to Beethoven. Stormzy to Adele, the performance featured children performing on cello, violin, guitar, keyboard, drums, piano and  djembes. Some of these children have lessons with Mr Britt, however many attend his lunch time  ‘Band’ club, which allows children in Yrs 5 and 6 access to free musical coaching. For all of these children it was their first opportunity to perform since before Covid.  Under the expert guidance of  Mr Britt, it was wonderful to see what can be achieved in such a relatively short space of time when  children are engaged and inspired. We now have approximately 100 pupils receiving music lessons privately which is almost a quarter of the school.

Grants from the Blue Spark foundation and Universal Music UK Sound Foundation have enabled us to purchase instruments and we are very grateful for their support.  As a school we aspire towards every child having the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and are constantly looking for different opportunities to make this a reality. Thanks to West Sussex music we have been lucky to gain access to a class set of Djembe drums, and these are frequently used within Mr Britt’s music lessons.

Music has always been at the heart of Georgian Gardens, and we hope that very soon we are able to showcase our different ensembles to a larger audience!
